Born in Nicetown Philly, I make my home on the Planet Earth, No particular Address Needed.
I started hosting stripper parties in Philly right after High School in the Early Mid 90's. Always known in the hood for being a "Good kid" I jumped right in the water with the pimps and the sharks and never looked back. The 1st Company I Founded was Freaks "R" Us Entertainement with 4 Friends and we were charged with finding clubs, booking girls,DJing,Providing Security and one of my partners started Stripping Himself...Philly's Original FREAK NASTY.
As far as my DJ Career, I can give credit to my current business partner Andrew Williams who I met in 1995 or so...We connected and became good friends and I would hold it down on the MIC for him while he rocked out the 1's and 2's.. I carried his record cases, helped him set up equipment all the while learning how to be a DJ behind the scenes. Today's DJ not having or knowing what it was like to have to carry those crates definitely missed a major part of the game. I dont hate on technology but those crates defined me to be who I am today. There are some DJ's even today who don't know how to set-up the very equipment they need to rock an event and I think thats just SAD.
My event roster has been pretty heavy as of the last few years. I started "Officially" doing radio in 2001 at Temple University with the help of my Publicist, Myxtique. From there I went on to become the only NON-STUDENT Faculty Advisor in the history of WHIP 91.3FM. Going back to 1998 I started working for a promoter who is very connected to the Philly Police Dept who sponsors a stripper event for the Superbowl that Ive been now hosting for over 13 years only missing one event because I was Locked Up---I know funny right? lol
In 2003 I started with Street Radio WDJP, a Pirate radio station based in Philadelphia and run by Whiz Kid, A crazy white boy with big dreams. He actually financed the whole operation out of a 3 story victorian house in West Philly. Equipped with a Pond,6 ft working volcano, Beach, zoo, recording studio, radio rooms, and living quarters. Some of Philly's elite DJ's and Artists stopped thru those hallowed walls making STREET RADIO Philly's Home for Indy Hip Hop. And for the record there is only One Real Street Radio and Street Radio WDJP and Wayne Lonergan is the owner of the Street Radio Brand www.StreetRadioWDJP.com Top Ranked in the World, you better Ask about us.
I parlayed my success at being on 2 Stations, Temple and Street Radio into hosting more events, DJing for bigger crowds and really linking up with key people in Hip Hop who could really help my powerful voice reach an even bigger audience. Also in 2003 I started DJing and Hosting at Sneaker Villa,Now known as The Villa. Initally working with Teddy B and DJ Diamond Kuts in North Philly, moving to the Gallery Mall in 2005 and helping that location reach sales goals over 1.5 Million Dollars a year making it no#1 in the Chain. The Villa also powered my vision to bringing a Indy Artist Tour to the State of Pa. I would shut down major intersections across the region, build a stage and allow up to 20 groups showcase their best work. Even becoming the 1st and only DJ to hold a corporate position with The Villa and being the only promoter to have a HIP HOP stage on the Parkway during CLEAR CHANNELS ANNUAL 105.3FM UNITY DAY FESTIVAL that drew over 3 million people per year.
Fast forward to 2006 I meet Mr Rahim Thompson, Brand manager for Converse and 94x50 Marketing based in NYC. He pushes my career through the roof by making me the Official DJ for all Converse Basketball events in Philly. There are Converse Open Gym events in 5 cities across the country all with Top Notch DJ's spinning. That turned into me going on tour with the NBA LIVE 09 TOUR promoting the release of the new game in Detroit,Chicago,Washington DC,New Jersey and New York. I've now been with the company for over 3 years and my prospects keep getting brighter being asked to to more and more is such an honor. Just being recognized as great talent is a big deal in this game.
My message to the Youth is to Learn about the business you're trying to get in. Know who's who before you start poppin fly. In the community i've spoken at numerous events and have led the charge to teach new DJ's the Business of being a DJ. As an artist you have to be willing to invest in your craft and work with people who are on your same level so you can both learn at the same time. Then you can reach out to someone like me who can take what you learned and put you in a situation where you can start to invest money properly into your craft. If you're not willing to Invest $$ into your Brand, why would you even reach out to me? Learn how to barter and by that I mean if you're asking someone to do something for you for "FREE" what are you offering in return? Are you promoting that DJ who's working with you? Do you get that DJ work at your family gatherings? Do you see where I'm going with this. So before you ask me to help you, ask yourself what are you willing to do to get in the situation you really want to be in? Good Music doesn't Sell itself but if it's really as good as you say, DJ's will be knocking down your door. But until then, Get your weight up and Invest. Stop being so Dam Cheap
Hip Hop is a business 2nd and a way of Life 1st. Once you're able to figure out which role you play. You have to become the spokesperson for it. Early Hip hop wasnt about selling out stadiums or rapping in front of The President. It was about expressing yourself through your music with the Help of the DJ. Somewhere along the line it got very mis-construed and Artists think they can do it without the DJ. Are You serious? I dont wanna get too deep with this because its close to my soul but STOP DISPRESPECTING DJ's in 2010. We are the Real roots of Hip Hop and without the DJ, who's gonna play your music? who's gonna let the next generation of Hip hop Junkies know about the history of the hip hop they love? Never Disrespect the Man or Woman who's responsible for the music and holds a microphone in their hand.
I support indy artists who support themselves. If i see your grind is as hard as the music you deliver to me then i'm willing to work for you, and with you to help you achieve success. I just started as Mix Show DJ in California on 105.9FM with Chucc1 and his only reason for hiring me was to help aid Indy artists to get major airplay. I have to break Indy Artists but the sad state is that most Indy artists dont understand the business enough to reap the benefit of me playing their music. Get your stuff right. Meaning BDS,Radio Wave, Sesac, Get your ASCAP/BMI and things like that. Learn about the business before you approact the business. I want to run down a list of artists that I work with but I dont wanna leave anybody out so i'll tell you this. You can check out over 250 Hours of Mixtapes,Radio Shows and Podcasts on my main website 24hrs a day at www.DJTRUUF.com and www.STREETRADIOWDJP.com By downloading and listening to the Music posted there, you support Indy Artists all across the globe and dats da truuf
