A little while back we reported that the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, had been hospitalized for a mysterious procedure. Well it has now come to light that she had been treated for pancreatic cancer. The disease, which is common in smokers and the obese, is curable if caught in very early stages. Unfortunately most cases (more than 80%) are diagnosed after the tumor has metastasized to other organs. Individuals who are diagnosed late usually have less than a five year survival rate. The fact that Ms. Franklin was able to undergo surgery is a good sign that the deadly disease may have been caught early as those with a late diagnosis are usually not a candidate for surgery. Our prayers and well wishes go out to Aretha Franklin and her family.
