In light of the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti, the Dominican Republic has sealed its border with the impoverished country. In recent weeks, more than 250 people have died from the disease that is contracted by contact with waste products. This is one of the many diseases that has been feared would surface as a result of those citizens displaced by the January 12, 2010 earthquake living in tent cities, and not having access to bathrooms with running water. Military forces have shot tear gas at groups of people attempting to cross over into the Dominican Republic. Only students and Dominican visa holders were being allowed in after washing their hands and being checked by medical personnel. Haiti currently has about 3,000 diagnosed cases of the disease. The country is claiming that the outbreak has been contained but the experts have expressed an expectation of the situation worsening.
